About the Webinar:
A short survey conducted by the 51¶¯ÂþÍø AAC SIG among its members showed that members would want to be provided with continuing education activity specifically on AAC tele-assessment and caregiver training for tele-AAC intervention. A follow-up FGD conducted showed that AAC practitioners do experience hesitations in conducting AAC tele-assessment for varied reasons including a lack of confidence in their current skill in conducting AAC assessment via telepractice. Barriers and challenges on AAC tele-assessment and tele-AAC intervention in general were also discussed. This webinar will address this need as expressed by the members. This will directly translate to improve quality of service provided by 51¶¯ÂþÍø members to their clients, specifically, to individuals with complex communication needs. The webinar also aims to spark interest for other SLPs to go into AAC specialization.
Tele-AAC
The 3-hour webinar is divided into 2 parts. The first part will focus on the AAC assessment process using the SETT framework. Participants will explore ways on how to gather pertinent student data, do observations to examine the environment and tasks, and administer trials to determine appropriate tools remotely.
The second part will focus on AAC implementation. Participants will explore resources and strategies on how to support communication partners remotely in implementing AAC at home.
Speaker:
Ma. Cristina A. Peralta, MS, CCC-SLP, is an AAC Specialist at West Contra Costa Unified School District in Richmond, California, where she assesses students with complex communication needs, consults with educational teams regarding low tech, mid-tech and high-tech AAC recommendations, and provides training to communication partners regarding AAC implementation. In addition to AAC, Ms. Peralta specializes in the area of autism spectrum disorders.
Ms. Peralta received her Bachelor's degree in Speech Pathology (with honors) from the University of the Philippines, Manila, and her Masters degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from California State University, East Bay. She also received a Professional Concentration Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder from University of California, Davis.
Ms. Peralta is an affiliate of ASHA SIG 12 Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and a member of the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (USSAAC). She also serves as an ASHA S.T.E.P mentor.
